What Makes TYWLS of Astoria a Special Place to Teach and Grow
Three-Year Teacher Residency
New teachers join a three-year Residency Program grounded in coaching, collaboration, and growth. Residents are supported by a facilitator teacher and engage in frequent intervisitations and job-embedded PD.
Rigorous, Mastery-Based Learning
Students work toward shared outcomes—such as innovate, argue, and conclude—using rubrics aligned across grades 6–12. These rubrics promote consistency across classrooms and emphasize transferable skills, supporting long-term growth rather than one-time performance.
Project-Based Learning and Intensives
Teachers create real-world, interdisciplinary projects that culminate in public exhibitions. Once a year, classes pause for two-week intensives where students work in mixed-grade cohorts on inquiry-based projects with fieldwork and community connections.
Collaborative & Proactive Solutions (CPS)
We use a trauma-informed, non-punitive model that centers empathy and student voice. CPS helps us address challenges through problem-solving and relationship-building rather than punishment.
Purposeful Advisory Program
Every student is matched with an advisor who serves as a coach, advocate, and connector. Advisory begins with a two-day retreat and continues daily to support both academic progress and emotional wellness.
Culture of Collaboration
At TYWLS of Astoria, teachers plan together, co-design learning, and share responsibility for every student. We believe no one grows alone.
Educator Voice and Growth
Teachers play a key role in shaping our school. You’re encouraged to lead, innovate, and help design systems that make our learning community stronger.
