TYWLS Admissions FAQ 2021-22
[Current 5th Graders]
When will the NYC DOE Middle School Application open?
The middle school application will open the week of January 10, 2022 and close on March 1, 2022.
How do I access the application?
If you are at a DOE elementary school, you will receive a welcome letter by mail, which will give you access to MySchools, the DOE’s portal for school admissions. You can also get a copy of your welcome letter from your current school counselor.
If you are not currently enrolled in the NYC DOE (ex: private and parochial school students), you can request a welcome letter from a Family Welcome Center.
Once the application opens, you will be able to rank schools in order of preference.
What can I do when I wait for the application to open?
Use the MySchools search feature to explore schools, and add us to your favorites by clicking the star icon next to our school name. This will make it easy to add us to your application when it opens.
Will TYWLS be screening students for admission?
Historically, TYWLS has screened students based on criteria such as elementary school grades and attendance. The DOE has paused all screenings for middle school applicants for the fall of 2022 due to the ongoing pandemic. Offers will be based on admissions priorities and random selection. Unfortunately, we cannot give priority based on criteria such as family placement at TYWLS.
For more information on how the DOE middle school admissions process will proceed this year, please read the NYC DOE Middle School Enrollment page. For questions or support, reach out to your current school counselor.

What about high school admissions to TYWLS of Astoria?
As a 6-12 school, continuing middle school students are offered priority admission to TYWLS of Astoria for high school. However, we typically have a limited number of 9th grade seats. As in previous years, applicants to TYWLS of Astoria will be screened based on multiple criteria, including current grades and work samples. State test scores will not be used due to disruptions in testing during the pandemic.
Previously, the screening process happened at the school level, but this year screening will happen centrally at the DOE level using one rubric for all screened schools. The DOE will be releasing more information about the screening process shortly.
High school applications will open the week of January 24th and close on February 28th, 2022. During that window, families can submit high school applications on the MySchools portal. Current NYC DOE students who need help logging into MySchools should contact their school counselor. If you are not currently enrolled in the NYC DOE (ex: private and parochial school students), you can request a welcome letter with your MySchool account information from a Family Welcome Center.
